DC Generator

Concept Explanation

DC Generator

DC generator also known as dynamo generates the current which does not change its direction with time, i.e. unidirectional current called direct current.

Principle: It works on the principle of electromagnetic induction.

Construction: Construction of DC generator / dynamo is same as that of AC generator except that in place of slip rings, split ring type commutator is used. A DC generator consists of a rectangular armature coil (ABCD) placed in a region of strong magnetic field (between the two poles of a permanent magnet). It experiences a torque due to the forces acting on it and produces a current. The two split rings X  and Y maintain contact of the coil with the load resistor through brushes P and Q without resistor being moved. With this arrangement, one brush is at all times in contact with the arm moving upwards in the field, while the other is in contact with the arm moving downwards.

Working: When the coil starts rotating with arm AB moving downwards and CD moving upwards, then by Fleming's right hand rule, the direction of induced current is BADC in the circuit. After half rotation, ring X comes in contact with brush Q and ring Y comes in contact with brush P

Therefore, brush P is at all times in contact with the wire moving downwards in the field, while the other is in contact with the wire moving upwards. The direction of current in external circuit remains the same. Thus, a unidirectional current is generated.
